Managing Company Growth
This workshop session will cater to service and supply companies that are facing the decision of how to best manage their company's growth.
Our speakers, Dan Owen, the founder and owner of Owen Construction Ltd and Ray Mills, from Kudu Industries will discuss their experiences and how they managed the growth of their companies. The presentation will focus on key attributes of their organization, culture and staff that enabled their companies to grow successfully.
OCL specializes in asbestos abatement, HAZMAT remediation, fireproofing and firestopping services in the Southern Alberta market. OCL has grown from humble beginnings to over 45 employees. Dan will use real-life examples to lead delegates through the decison making process involved in considering whether or not to sell and and become part of a larger company, or, develop internal systems for managing growth.
Kudu has grown from two guys and in a garage to a vertically integrated company with 200 employees in four countries. Kudu has encountered many challenges, including a "near death experience", in growing from a cottage company to a medium sized enterprise. Ray will present the key strategy that has enabled Kudu to continue to grow in a sustainable way as well as review resources and tools that have supported.
Speakers
Dan Owen, OCL
Dan started in the asbestos abatement/ HAZMAT remediation industry in 1982. With the exception of a brief four-year tour of duty as a musician playing the Western Canadian bar circuit, Dan has been in the abatement industry for 22 years. Working "on the tools" in an industry in growth mode as far as regulatory compliance and technique, provided Dan with a keen insite on the expectations of customers, regulators, suppliers and the unique challenges of being employed in the field. In June 2000, Dan decided to take advantage of his experiance and formed D. Owen Construction Ltd. (OCL). As OCL matured, the economy in Alberta gained momentum. Many projects in Construction and The Patch came on line. Older buildings slated for demolition or upgrade were in need of remediation, and many Petro-chemical facilities were being de-commissioned or upgraded, again requiring remediation. With a core staff of 40-45, OCL continues to service its customer base with Dan at the helm.
Ray Mills, Kudu Industries
Ray Mills and his father founded Kudu Industries in 1989. Prior to founding Kudu, Ray was employed by a variety of oil field service companies ranging from construction to drilling. His post secondary education included majoring in chemistry before transferring to Engineering where he fell short of the Dean's list. Married for as long as he has had Kudu, Ray has 3 children, 13, 11 and 7 who occupy most of his "discretionary" time.
Ray is an avid skier and wannabe golfer.
International Opportunities & Curiosities of Operating Abroad
There are few areas of the oil and gas industry in which Canada does not boast world-class expertise. As explorers and producers we have found and developed hydrocarbons in some of the most challenging environments known to man. We have some of the longest pipelines in the world. Our lawyers and economists provide ground-breaking expertise to many governments around the world. The governments have produced legislation and systems which are mimicked by many countries. Indeed we have it all.
Now, however, we have an opportunity to cast a net which is even wider. The National Oil Companies (NOC’s) control the vast majority of the world’s oil and gas resources. What they have in hydrocarbon resources they lack in both human resources and project management expertise. Whether you are an explorer, a developer and producer, a manufacturer, a training company or a consultant, the NOC’s need your help. This presentation will outline some of the opportunities available to you.

Capital Markets Overview: Where Are We in the Energy Cycle?
Deja-vu: - We have seen this before in the 1980's. Record oil prices, record gas prices and rising industry costs. Add into the mix governments changing fiscal terms and equity markets concerned about economic slowdown, inflation, and rising interest rates - and a challenging environment is created. As before, challenges give rise to new business opportunities and new directions as Canada and the world once again adapt to an upward shift in long-term energy prices. Terry Peters will identify some of the similarities and differences and provide a markets perspective on where we are in the Energy cycle.
